Chelsea Textiles New York Showroom
Sims Hilditch were commissioned to design the new Chelsea Textiles showroom in Manhattan, a 4,000-square-foot space housed in the historic Fine Arts Building on East 59th Street.
Now serving as the New York flagship, the showroom presents Chelsea Textiles’ full offering of fabrics, wallpapers, furniture, and trimmings, alongside a dedicated home for the Robert Kime collections. Renowned for their hand-embroidered textiles inspired by 17th and 18th Century designs, the brand’s furniture collections are equally exquisite.
The brief was to evoke the same sense of intimacy and elegance Chelsea Textiles’ is known for, while making the most of the new showroom’s scale and light. Drawing inspiration from their Pimlico Road flagship, the aim was to feel like stepping into a grand drawing room of a private apartment. The result is a calm and refined space where clients and designers can immerse themselves in the collections, while also experiencing the warm atmosphere of a home.
Natural light pours through tall windows at both ends of the floorplan, guiding visitors through six principal rooms and a long textile design library, each space designed to highlight different elements of the brand’s offering. Throughout, layers of furniture, textiles, and art create a richly detailed setting. Antique pieces sit alongside Chelsea Textiles’ hand-crafted collections, while curated artworks range from 18th Century Swedish royal portraits to 20th Century works by Max Ernst, Le Corbusier, and Arman.
The foyer sets the tone with damask wallpaper designed in collaboration with Patrick Kinmonth, offset by a grid of Swedish royal portraits that celebrate both history and grandeur. In the sitting room, the street-facing windows are dressed in tall curtains to filter the light, while fabric-clad walls and passementerie trims echo the brand’s heritage of craftsmanship.
At the heart of the space, large central worktables are flanked by wings of embroidered fabric, offering a practical place for designers and clients to collaborate. Beyond, the space opens into three dedicated furniture and accessory rooms, divided into mid-century Gustavian and French country furniture collections. These are grounded by collectible rugs from Märta Måås-Fjetterström and illuminated by sculptural lighting, including a Serge Mouille wall light. Every detail has been considered to show how the collections can live within a home.
Sims Hilditch also designed the adjoining Robert Kime showroom, a space with richly upholstered furniture, layered fabrics and antiques, all capturing the warmth and character of Kime’s unmistakable aesthetic.
