The Old Farmhouse

For a family with one spouse hailing from the USA and the other often travelling for work, putting down roots in this beautiful former farmhouse was a greatly longed for dream.

Set in idyllic English countryside with views over paddocks and the River Stour, the 17th Century property was a unique find that our clients soon fell in love with. We were delighted to be commissioned to help them create their ideal home, which would welcome friends and family from near and far with colour and warmth.

As with many old houses the original layout, whilst spacious, was not exactly what the family needed. To mitigate this, the addition of a two-storey extension to the rear greatly increased the usable space for a new kitchen, utility room and bootroom as well as two additional bedrooms and bathrooms. To fulfil our clients’ love of entertaining we created an open plan kitchen and informal dining area with two islands and banquette seating for large gatherings. To enhance the character of the new rooms, we designed unique details like coffered ceilings and decorative mouldings to dovetail perfectly with the historical features present in the original buildings. The final challenge of knitting old and new together was overcome by the use of bold colours, wallpapers and contemporary patterned fabrics throughout the scheme.
